The history of glass dildos: a timeline of sex toy materials mytoyfirst.com/dildos
Our energetic lineage has used many interesting adult toy materials, including the use of yams as a personal lubricant (yes, yams, now a worthy casserole dish) and turtle nails as condoms.
Glass Toys Feature 1
Fortunately, today we've moved on to more vagina-friendly silicone based lubricants and latex condoms, but are our glass dildos also a big step into the 21st century? Read on to learn more about this fragile and beautiful sex toy material's journey throughout history!
As I know, you already know that sex toys come in a wide variety of materials. But how do we arrive at which materials are best for sex toys and which ones aren't so great? Repeated experimentation.
Throughout human history, our insatiable sexual appetite has been the subject of some very compelling innovations. Why? Siren songs, muses, provocateurs-they all serve the same purpose, offering an explosion of possibilities and a desire to experience sensual pleasure in new and exciting ways.
This is where invention comes into play. After all, there is almost nothing that inspires the collective human psyche more than the intense desire to wait until the dawn breaks.
It may be surprising, however, to discover that the first written account of the use of glass dildos comes from an early playwright's parody of Christian morality. Evidence from as early as the 1600s suggests that hand-blown hollow glass dildos filled with warm water were commonly used as a means of self-gratification by Italian nuns of that period. In fact, references appear in multiple texts from the 1600s-1700s.
Glass seemed to be popular on the back seat for a while until 1915, after Corning Incorporated patented heat-resistant glass for use in kitchen utensils. Yes, Corning was like your grandmother's Corning dinnerware pans. But this type of glass was actually invented in 1893 by German chemist Otto Schott and is the ideal material for laboratory glassware. Long live science!
Low-expansion borosilicate glass remains the hardest, least porous glass on the market today. However, it is also very expensive to manufacture because it requires additional annealing time and does not fill molds as easily as other forms of glass.
Today, most items made on U.S. soil bearing the Pyrex brand mark are actually made from less expensive tempered glass rather than borosilicate. World Kitchen Corp, for example, was spun off from Corning in 1998 and was the subject of numerous complaints about its products' inability to withstand nominal temperatures without breaking.
Indeed, it always helps to know that you or your partner has the real Pyrex inside, not the knock-offs. Learn more about the dangers of poor quality glass toys in the book "Why Not Buy Handmade Sex Toys," which also discusses the safety of colored glass.

When in doubt, it is best to use a clear glass dildo, or one that has the color embedded inside the dildo and not painted on the surface. My all-time favorite body-safe tinted glass dildo is the Don Wands Glass Wand/Emerald/White Helix, hands down.
It is largely considered hypoallergenic and body safe. It is also a dishwasher, oven and microwave safe for modern temperature entertainment and sanitation. It can be used underwater and under any lubricant.
The latest breakthrough in the field of glass dildos is the vibrating glass dildo, which has the same non-toxic properties as non-vibrating dildos, but with an extra kick that pushes you over the edge without hitting the carpal tunnel. I especially recommend trying the Think Love file Johnson if you've never felt the pleasure of borosilicate buzzing. It's blissful.
Where is the glass dildo that will disappear half a century from now? Only time will tell, but I'm sure they will continue to evolve as we do.
